Why fork Recordly instead of building from scratch?
Recordly already has the most polished open-source timeline editor for screen recordings — 995 tests, CUDA compositor, full cursor + webcam styling. Building that from scratch takes years. We focus on what it doesn't have: AI.
Where is my API key stored?
Locally in your Electron app's userData directory. Never uploaded — we have no server. Open your system keychain if you want OS-level encryption.
Why AGPL 3.0? Can I use this commercially?
AGPL 3.0 means you can use it, modify it, and ship it — as long as your modifications are also open-source under AGPL. Internal company tools, SaaS products, and commercial distributions all need their source published. We chose AGPL to keep the fork honest. If you need a different license, talk to the original Recordly maintainer.
Which AI provider is cheapest?
DeepSeek-V3 via DeepSeek's OpenAI-compatible API is roughly 10× cheaper than GPT-4o for the same summary quality on Chinese + English content. For pure English, GPT-4o-mini is competitive. For nuanced translation, Claude 3.5 Sonnet wins but costs more.
Is this a paid SaaS? Will my recordings leave my computer?
No SaaS, no cloud. Recordings stay on your disk. Only the audio you submit to Whisper and the text you submit to GPT go to the AI provider — which is whichever one you configured. Your video frames never leave your machine.
